What Longboard Deck Should I Get?
The longboard deck is one of the most important parts of your setup. Just like complete longboards, decks come in a huge range of shapes and sizes and you can choose between carving, cruiser, downhill, freeride, freestyle and dancer.
Cruiser longboard decks usually have between 3 and 7 layers of maple wood - perfect for cruising and carving. Meanwhile, freeride and downhill longboard decks are usually made out of 7 to 9 layers.
When it comes to materials, maple longboard decks are the most traditional, with multiple veneers compressed on top of each other. Bamboo longboard decks are often encased in fiberglass and have a springlike feel to them. Carbon fiber decks are the most expensive to produce but do result in a top-quality deck that is both rigid and lightweight.
Top Mount vs Drop Through Longboard Deck
One of the biggest choices to make is whether to go for a top mount or drop through deck.
With drop through decks, the boards are lower to the ground providing you with more stability when riding, and the cut outs make sure there is no wheel bite when turning. These decks are ideal for reaching high speeds. Meanwhile, top mount longboard decks are ideal for carving and cruising.
Whichever deck type you end up choosing, it is good to know that all longboard trucks are compatible.
When to Replace Your Longboard Deck
Many people want to know how often they should replace their decks. The truth is, there is no magic number of days for when you need to update your deck and it depends on how regularly you ride and the style of longboarding you do. Some decks will last for years with regular riding while others will only be good for months. If cracks and chips are starting to show, then it may be time to consider a new deck.
Of course, there are ways to increase the lifespan of your deck. The simplest thing to do is to avoid too much water and sun exposure. This will weaken the deck and increase the likelihood of cracks.
